Sand Onsen

Now, this is an onsen experience with a difference, namely a distinct lack of water! At Beppu Kaihin Sunaba, guests get buried up to their necks under layers of sand which is naturally warmed water rich in sodium-hydrogen carbonate, which provides therapeutic benefits to the whole body.
After around 15 minutes under the sand, guests can shake themselves down before showering and jumping into a more traditional onsen to finish off the whole experience.
The natural warmth of the sand, combined with its even weight distribution over your whole body leaves you feeling truly relaxed.

Beppu’s Hoyoland features separated indoor mud onsens, as well as a mixed-gender, large outdoor mud onsen. Simply bathing in the water has a number of health and therapeutic benefits, however, to get the full benefits on offer, we recommend trying out the exfoliating qualities of the mud by covering yourself in it, don’t worry, everyone does!
People note that using the mud onsen feels like using a full-body exfoliant mask, which feels absolutely refreshing once you wash it off.
