A unique onsen experience!
Now, this is an onsen experience with a difference, namely a distinct lack of water! At Beppu Kaihin Sunaba, guests get buried up to their necks under layers of sand which is naturally warmed water rich in sodium-hydrogen carbonate, which provides therapeutic benefits to the whole body.
After around 15 minutes under the sand, guests can shake themselves down before showering and jumping into a more traditional onsen to finish off the whole experience.
The natural warmth of the sand, combined with its even weight distribution over your whole body leaves you feeling truly relaxed.
After your first visit, you're bound to wonder why you hadn’t visited sooner!

An experience for everyone.
Across all of Oita, there are a number of tattoo-friendly onsens that cater to guests with body art that many traditional onsens still have rules against.
One such establishment is Yuyo Ebisuya, located in Beppu City, with great views out across the bay. Yuyo Ebisuya features two open-air baths, one filled with sulfur water, which is great for skin exfoliation and one filled with fresh spring water, great for moisturizing the skin.
Wherever you choose to relax, Oita has a number of establishments that ensure the onsen experience can be enjoyed by everyone.
An increasing number of onsens are relaxing their tattoo policies.
Fantastic for the skin!
Another unique type of onsen and one that’s especially great for skin treatment is the onsen where guests can cover themselves in mud!
Beppu’s Hoyoland features separated indoor mud onsens, as well as a mixed-gender, large outdoor mud onsen. Simply bathing in the water has a number of health and therapeutic benefits, however, to get the full benefits on offer, we recommend trying out the exfoliating qualities of the mud by covering yourself in it, don’t worry, everyone does!
People note that using the mud onsen feels like using a full-body exfoliant mask, which feels absolutely refreshing once you wash it off.
Relax and treat your skin at the same time!
Get lost in thought.
There are a number of coastal onsens around the entire Oita coastline that offer stunning sea views to take in whilst relaxing.
One example is Beppu’s Shiosai No Yado Seikai, which offers open-air baths right next to the sea, providing the perfect environment to feel the stresses from the day to day life simply melt away.
Many onsen resorts located around the coastline are also hotels, so be sure to keep that in mind when you’re booking your perfect trip to Oita. There's perhaps no better way to start the day than a relaxing dip while overlooking the sea.
Let the views help you relax.
A view from above,
As relaxing as views overlooking the sea are, they are not necessarily everyone’s perfect view to relax to. In stark contrast, Oita is home to a number of onsens which offer stunning city views, which can be a lot more relaxing than they sound!
One such example is the JR Kyushu Blossom hotel, situated next to Oita station, in Oita city. The stunning onsen treats guests to panoramic views of the hustle and bustle city, which can be enjoyed from the distance of the rooftop.
We highly recommend visiting an onsen that provides a unique view of some kind to make the relaxation process even more stimulating.
WIth views overlooking Oita City's streets, you can watch everyday life unfold in front of you.
